murphy's graphic design laws

• Your fonts will default.
• If you have two versions of a photo, you will send the wrong one to the printer.
• Promises made by the salesperson never make it to the pressroom.
• The salesperson will promise anything.
• If the text consists of two words, one will be misspelled.
• Speed. Quality. Affordability. Pick two.
• If the run is wrong, it's never the press operator's fault.
• Spell checkers don't.
• Grammar checkers don't, either.
• Global search-and-replaces aren't.
• The index entry you leave out will be the first one the client looks under.
• Optical Character Recognition is good comedy.
• If three designs are shown to a client, your least favorite will be chosen.
• If two designs are shown, a third will be requested. If provided, then one of the first two will be chosen.
• Blueline proofs reveal previously invisible errors.
• The best designs never survive contact with the client.
• You will misspell the name of the client's spouse.
• Your best idea is already copyrighted.
• Creative inspiration flows in inverse proportion to the distance from the studio.
• Doctors, astronauts, and plumbers need training to do their jobs, but anyone with a copy of Publisher is a graphic designer
• No matter how detailed the tech support FAQ is, nobody has ever heard of your problem
• The number of colors in a client's design will equal the number of colors in the original bid specs, plus two
• The client's disk won't run on your equipment
• If you purchase new equipment to read your client's disk, it will be the last disk of that type you will ever receive
• Your client won't "get it."
• A single picture tells more than a thousand words. Any technical picture has more than thousand bugs
• A single picture has more bugs than be described with thousand words

Abisko Washbasin from Eumar: the beauty of conservation | Trendir

Breathtakingly brilliant in glacial white… the Abisko Washbasin from Eumar is a totally new concept for our modern lifestyle. In these environmentally-conscious times the cast mineral marble washbasin Abisko brings us back to nature. Inspired by the unspoilt waterfalls of the Swedish National Park Abisko, the sink is unfettered by pipes. Nor does it allow water to accumulate in a big tub, something designers Johan Kauppi and Lars Sundström deem unnecessary. Rather, one should be aware of just how much water one is using, and catch it with careful consideration. An extraordinary, sculptural piece, the Abisko washbasin captures the freshness of mountain streams as water cascades down the length of the sink to slip away down a discreet floor-level grill. Living with an awareness of our limited resources, surrounded by cherished objects… these are the keys to happiness offered by the Abisko Washbasin from Eumar.

Paper Sculptures by Jen Stark

These explosions of color are paper sculptures by the extremely talented Jen Stark. Since graduating in 2005, Stark has exhibited around the United States as well as in the UK and France. Both her sculptures and illustrations are extremely vibrant, and while her drawings seem to be abstract in nature, Stark’s paper sculptures are structured and geometric.

The layers of colored paper draw one’s eye gradually into the center of the sculpture making each individual sculpture like portals into different psychedelic dimensions.

The Cloudy Collection

The Cloudy Collection is an ongoing collaboration with artists whose work I love. Every three months (or so) we will release a new collection of original, limited-edition prints for very affordable prices (US and Canadian shipping is free!) Plus, a portion of the sales will go toward an environmental organization.

dia de los muertos

the 2nd of november is the dia de los muertos or day of the dead and is celebrated in mexico and in a lot of the southwest states of the U.S. it is a day where those who have died are welcomed back home to spend a day with loved ones. usually altars are prepared with photos and things the deceased would like. some even have picnics in graveyards where the departed are the guests of honour. family members and even pets are not just fondly remembered but considered still members of the family. it is based on the idea that life is but a dream and when you die you wake up to your real life.

on the day of the dead they come to visit and party like nobody's business. i think dia de los muertos is cooler than halloween for its decorations and music, for its sense of festival and especially for its art. it might seem like all skeletons but they're all cool, partying skeletons!

graphic designer vs. client

a short youtube gem called graphic designer vs. client sums up the professional experience for many, sadly enough. says the client needing a brochure for practically pennies and in the next seventeen minutes: "are you going to do it microsoft word? i have a friend who says that it is all you need for really nice looking professional publications. in fact, he could give you some tips on layout, as he's done a course on interior design." NSFW, because the designer gives a series of honest and appropriately profane responses.
